Taking female physicality as her starting point, Florentina Holzinger shifts between
popular genres such as the talent show or the revue, and canonical Art with a capital A. In Ophelia’s Got Talent, the Viennese choreographer has taken inspiration from literary characters associated with water: Leda, Melusine, Ondine, nymphs, Nereids, mermaids and, needless to say, Ophelia. They entice us into the depths to confront the audience with what they do not want to see: an imminent climate catastrophe, wars, misogyny, objectification, and so on. Holzinger reflects on violence, procreation and healing; she explores water-related themes as metaphors for identity, survival and transformation in the face of impending crises. Ophelia’s Got Talent is a spectacular, physical study of the psychology of water in the 21st century by an intergenerational, all-female cast.
