Hanoch Levin (1943-1999) is considered one of the most interesting Israeli playwrights of the twentieth century, one of the most original and innovative artists of his generation. He aroused extreme emotions. By some, he was considered to be the conscience of the nation, by others he was criticized for political radicalism. The master of the grotesque – as he was described – published 56 dramas, about 30 of which were staged during his lifetime. In the well-constructed black comedy “Suitcase Packers” (subtitled “Comedy with eight funerals”) he shows monotonous, grey and dull life of a small urban community where everyone knows each other well, and everyone is dissatisfied and unhappy – everyone dreams, wastes life, and eventually dies. Some would willingly escape abroad, to a better world where they could fulfill their plans, but they lack energy, faith and courage.
