“Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” is the most famous Tom Stoppard’s play (Oscar winner for the screenplay for the film “Shakespeare in Love”). The text was written in the sixties of the twentieth century, and in 1990 the author made the film with the same title.
If you remember “Hamlet” – that’s good, if not – no problem. Although the main characters of this play are figures taken from the works of Shakespeare – Hamlet’s two friends escorting the prince to England, whose death is commented with one and only sentence. Actually, we will not learn anything more about them from Shakespeare. Stoppard, who in his own version performs the reconstruction of events, comes to help. This brilliant tragicomedy presents the journey of title characters, showing what circumstances it involves. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, the two cowards and conformists, who do not have the courage to openly say what they think and are not able to take any decisions, by their inaction they cause the end which is included in the title. And what is it about? Some say it is the story of Hamlet from the perspective of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Others that it is “Hamlet” from behind the scenes, and the author says that this play is “about two courtiers in the Danish castle. Two meaningless humanoids surrounded by intrigues, having very little information, the most of which is false … It is about two guys. “
