After more than thirty years, “Maria Stuart” returns on the Polish theater stage. Grzegorz Wiśniewski is one of the most interesting Polish directors of the young generation. In his original text development, he focused on the tragedy of a man entangled in power, showing a person full of intense emotions. Maria, accused of a plot to assassinate Elizabeth, expects the verdict. We observe the struggles of two queens. Mary, Queen of Scots is convinced that the meeting with Elizabeth, Queen of England, will allow them to reach an agreement. Elizabeth does not want to be considered a regicide and looks for a solution to avoid responsibility for ordering the death penalty. Each queen has the supporters, the people they can “trust”, who in the political labyrinth will do anything to maintain their considerations – even at the cost of one’s life. The political game is ruthless. Toruń “Mary Stuart” shows the dramatic clash of moral virtue and great passions, especially lust for power, to which not only queens are succeptible. Schiller’s play written in 1800 is a political drama, extremely current in the twenty-first century
